Angouleme is the capital of the Charente department, the old town is built high on a rocky promontory overlooking the Charente river.

More than 2km of the original ramparts that were built to protect the town still remain intact - in September each year there is a classic car race that takes place along these ramparts - definitely worth a visit!

The impressive Hotel de Ville (Town Hall) is built on the site of a much earlier chateau. Two of the towers which remain (they date from the 13th and 15th centuries) have been incorporated into the building.

Other places of interest are the Palais de Justice and the Church of Saint-Andre. On the southern side of the ramparts you will find the Cathedral of Saint Pierre, which dates back some 900 years.

There are several museums also worth a visit, including the Museum of Comic Books.

The Comic Festival

Each January the International Comic Festival is held in the town, taking over most of the central area near the Paper Museum and the Hotel de Ville. It last for about two weeks!

Shopping and Eating

There is plenty of opportunities to shop, both in the central town and at the shopping centres on the outskirts. There are many places to eat in the centre of Angouleme, particulary around the old part. Take a walk along the small winding streets and you will find dozens of small bistros and restaurants to choose from.

Angouleme is about 40km from La Mirabelle and an easy journey down the N10 which will take approx. 40 minutes.
