Cognac is situated in the more westerly part of the Charente, on the road from Angouleme to Saintes. It is about an hour from La Mirabelle.

It is well known of course because of the brandy produced in the region and whilst the town itself is very interesting, a visit to one of the distilleries is of course a must!

There are two parts to Cognac -

The Old Town

This is the medieval part of the town , with narrow cobbled streets. Most of the distilleries are in this area, as is the Charente river. Alonside the river is where you will find many brandy maturing houses.

Do visit the chateau and if you have time (about 1 1/2 hours) during the spring and summer, there is a river trip.

The New Town

This where you will find the majority of shops and cafes and in the centre of Cognac there is a large public garden to explore. It covers several hectares!

In the gardens you will find the grand Town Hall, plus the Museum of Art and History.

Outside of the town and to the north is Parc Francois 1st, which offers plenty of walks, through the forseted area and beside the river. This is where you can hire a canoe or take the boat trip along the river in the traditional boat, or gabarre.
