La Rochelle

The Town

The picturesque coastal town of La Rochelle is very much worth a visit, with a well preserved 17th century old town, plus harbour.

The harbour is a very active area, with plenty of boats, various market stalls and usually a number of buskers! Of course as a fishing port there are many excellent fish restaurants.

An evening walk to take in the sunset, along the old town walls or the harbour front is a 'must do'.

There are plenty of shops both on the main streets and side roads. There is also an excellent market to explore, which has been held in the same location for several centuries. The current marketr hall was built in 1835 and is an interesting building in itself.

There is an excellent Aquarium near the harbour, plus several museums including the Natural History museum.

The Islands

There are boat trips from the harbour and out to the islands - Ile de Ré, Ile d'Oleron and Fort Boyard. Ile de Ré has some excellent beaches, but do note that in the summer months it can be extremely busy, plus to get to the island you must cross via a toll bridge.

For more information oin activities and events in and around the area, we suggest that you visit the official La Rochelle Tourisme site
